Cozy modern contemporary living room with Eames lounge chair found in our Edison Residence Project

Edison

Vaughan, Ontario

"Open, cohesive and practical for the whole family is always a tricky balancing act."

The goal for our Edison Project was to give this Vaughan Great Room a modern facelift that required minimal renovation work while also getting away from the original builder-grade features that came with the in the home in the early 2010’s.

Our jumping off point for our Edison project was the fireplace. The existing double-sided gas fireplace was to remain, but the original, traditional looking builder-grade mantel was dated. We also had to be mindful of existing outlets, air return and switches located just to the left of the fireplace that had to remain in order to keep costs down.

Our solution in Edison was to create a half wall of stone that acts as a backdrop for a lounge chair and ottoman. A floating shelf above allows for plenty of space to showcase personal items, photos and holiday décor.

Edison houses a large area rug with pops of rust, caramel and orange anchors all the pieces in the Family Room. Rather than a traditional coffee table, we chose ottomans with all different sizes, colours and materials. Each ottoman has an accompanying tray to place drinks or décor that can be removed to create more seating for the client’s large family.

An expanding table in the breakfast area creates room big enough for 12 or more. Perfect for holiday dinners as the clients love to cook. It was important that their Great Room could host many people at once as they use this space often, even when eating in larger gatherings. The client made it clear this room was used more than the adjacent formal dining room during holidays as they prefer to all be together and we made sure no one felt left out or missed any of the action when the cooking starts.

We also approached the main powder room with a bold colour, getting rid of the impractical builder grade pedestal sink and installing a floating vanity with a lot more storage for toiletries. The dark green wall colour paired with exotic prints and gold accents is sure to stand out to guests.

Our Client's Testimonial

After a pretty exhaustive search we ended up hiring Level Studio for our family room renovation, powder room remodeling and first floor painting job, and we are so happy we did. Luca and Vinh have been amazing to work with. As a full service design firm, they took out all of the complexities of managing the different pieces and trades associated with our remodeling. They were professional, attentive, creative and did an excellent job of communicating project status. We had some general sense of what we wanted to do but found it a bit challenging to be very descriptive of our vision. Luca and Vinh were patient and able to tease it out and put our vision in motion. All the trades they hired came as scheduled, did their work professionally and left our space tidy. We had some delays in getting furniture and some pieces due to COVID. Luca and Vinh kept us well informed and up to date on everything. They were an absolute pleasure to work with. We plan on using them again in future projects and would recommend Level Studio to anyone.
