The Forever Home

Designing a space that works for every stage of life

A forever home isn’t just a place you love today. It’s a place that continues to work for you ten, twenty, thirty years from now. For anyone investing seriously in a forever home design, that kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It’s designed from the start.

That’s where universal design comes in. Not the clinical, institutional version most people picture, but the quiet, considered kind that makes a home feel effortless to live in at every stage of life.

What universal design actually means

Universal design is a set of principles for creating spaces that are intuitive and functional for everyone, regardless of age or physical ability. Done well, you don’t notice it. The space just feels generous, easy, and well thought out.

It’s also not something you plan for later. It’s relevant right now. When you’re carrying groceries, moving furniture, hosting a parent who uses a cane, or navigating a hallway with a stroller. The homes that handle all of that gracefully are the ones built with these principles from day one.

Three things worth building in from the start

The details that make a home work long-term are rarely the ones that show. They’re in the framing, the rough-ins, the door widths. Three in particular are worth getting right from the start.

Curbless showers

The curbless shower is one of the most elegant expressions of universal design in a primary bathroom. Removing the threshold creates a continuous floor plane that makes the entire space feel larger, cleaner, and more spa-like.

It also eliminates the most common tripping hazard in the home. That’s a practical benefit that serves you immediately, not just eventually. And if roll-in access is ever needed down the line, the infrastructure is already there without any retrofitting.

Structural blocking for future grab bars

This is the detail most people skip, and the most valuable one to get right.

Rather than installing grab bars you may not want yet, the smarter move is to have your contractor install solid wood blocking behind the finished walls in key bathroom locations during the framing stage. It’s completely hidden behind your tile. You’d never know it’s there.

But if a grab bar is ever needed years from now, it can be installed cleanly and securely into the reinforced wall without opening up tile or redoing finishes. It keeps your options open without changing a single thing about how the space looks today.

36-inch doorways

Standard interior doors are typically 30 inches wide. Specifying 36 inches throughout main living areas, including the primary bedroom and en suite, is a small decision at the build stage that pays off significantly over time.

The practical benefit is a 32-inch clear opening, which comfortably accommodates a wheelchair or walker if ever needed. But the design benefit is immediate. Wider doors feel more substantial, more considered, and contribute to an overall sense of flow and spaciousness that’s a hallmark of well-planned custom homes.

It’s one of those details that costs very little to get right early and a lot to change later.

Designing for the long term

A home built with these principles isn’t a compromise on aesthetics. It’s a more considered version of the same vision. The details that make a space flexible are often the same ones that make it feel generous and well-crafted.
